The broader Superannuation Industry (large Banks and Financial Institutions) would prefer that you leave your accumulated Super with them, charging you fees and other charges and delivering poor performance without your input or consultation. The Basics

In basic terms, the setting up of your own Self Managed Super Fund SMSF puts you in control of your existing accumulated super and all future super contributions which then in turn allows you, as Trustee, to invest the funds assets.

Effectively, the process is as follows:

1. Set up your SMSF.
2. Open bank account in name of SMSF.
3. Transfer/rollover all your existing super held with other funds into your SMSF.
4. Use your SMSF dollars to invest in complying assets, e.g shares.
5. Borrow money from banks so that your SMSF can invest in investment properties.
